




Upstage
(1) The stage area farthest from the audience, towards the back wall. Early stages were raked stages, sloping towards the audience, thus an actor walking away from the audience was literally walking up.
(2) To steal the audience's attention away from the normal action and place it on oneself. Although excusable in a comedy skit, upstaging can ruin a play.
