A family oriented stage show consisting of unrelated specialty acts, singers, song & dance teams, comic & dramatic skits, animal acts, acrobats, monologists, comedians, musical acts from the legitimate theater and a headliner. Because of the large number of acts on an average playbill, most were ten minutes in length or less. Officially created by Tony Pastor in New York City in 1881, in their heyday, huge vaudeville theater chains developed across the United States. Performers would appear at a new theater weekly as they traveled the circuit. Vaudeville began dying out in the 1930's because of the advent of radio and motion pictures. Modern revues and variety shows are a form of vaudeville.Vom
