Selected Bibliography on the Useful Plants and Agriculture
of India, Version 1.0
by Steve Diver (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Selected Bibliography on the Useful Plants and Agriculture of India is a compilation of books purchased, or noted down in a journal, during the authorís 2-month journey to India between December 1996 and February 1997. Locations the author visited include: New Delhi, Ananda Pattanam Ashram/Master Unit near Thano in the District of Dehra Dun, Calcutta, Ananda Nagar Ashram/Master Unit in Purulia District of West Bengal, Asha Vihar in Bihar, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, rural villages in Gujarat, Bombay, and Pune.
Information is a critical link to technical assistance, networking, and funding opportunites. It is hoped this bibliography will enhance the ability of farm advisors, permaculture teachers, and rural community organizors to access vital literature and resources in their effort to assist Indian farmers design, or re-discover, sustainable farming systems.
Version 1.0 is lacking a number of periodicals and resources noted in a misplaced journal. Further, one box of books containing titles on ayurveda and farming is still sitting in India, quite probably eaten away by mold and neglect. The list is unique because each item was reviewed and determined to be noteworthy by the author. Titles were purchased or noted down in swift visits to bookstores, libraries, and nonprofit organizational resource centers in Bombay, Pune, New Delhi, and Calcutta between visits to rural villages, ashrams, and farming projects.
A companion piece to this bibliography, "Farming the Future: P.R. Sarkarís Unique Contributions to Agriculture", published in Transcending Boundaries: Prabhat Ranjain Sarkar's Theories of Individual & Social Transformation, (Gurukula Press, Maleny, Australia, 1999), can be read online at:http://ncatark.uark.edu/~steved/sarkar-ag.htmlMuch of the authorís interest in the useful plants and agriculture of India stem from his 1976-onwards association with Ananda Marga Pracaraka Samgha, an international socio-spiritual organization based in West Bengal, and its numerous farming and gardening and rural revitalization projects, which are explained in greater detail in the aforementioned essay.
